Prof. Tom Bäckström, a leading scientist in the field of speech coding at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen (AudioLabs), has been invited to undertake a professorship at the Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics, located at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.
At Aalto University he will be working as a Professor of Practice and will be responsible for research and teaching in the area of “Speech Technology”. As a result, Bäckström will continue his long-standing research in the fields of speech and audio coding, unified speech and audio coding, speech production, and speech analysis. In this position, Bäckström follows Prof. Dr. Paavo Alku, who was awarded an academy professorship from the Academy of Finland.
Bäckström has worked at the AudioLabs for seven years and, as of 2013, has headed the specific research group “Speech Coding”, which conducts research and further development of speech processing tools specifically for mobile devices in order to enhance the communication experience. In addition, he gives lectures and seminars in audio processing and speech coding at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
An internationally respected figure in audio research, Bäckström will bring his expertise in speech coding to bear on multiple important projects taking place at Aalto University.
